how about... 'why do we, as an audience, love the concept of a werewolf more than any other human-to-animal metamorphoses?'
This is much better - but, unless you can prove that audiences 'love the concept of a werewolf more than any other', such a generalisation has no place in an essay question; unless you can survey the entire world, that is. Instead; 'This assignment will investigate the enduring cultural popularity of the werewolf...' (No one doubts that the werewolf is an 'enduring' idea - because every decade has its version - the proof is already there).
